Director: Sofia Coppola
Review: This is apparently a very polarizing movie, with the detractors claiming it is incredibly slow and that “nothing happens.” Unsurprisingly, it flew by for me and the pacing felt fine. Yes, it re-uses a lot of the themes and even situations of Lost In Translation, and yes, it is inferior in every way, but that does not make it a lacking film. It’s still pretty, sad, and one can really get into it if one is in the adequate mood. As you watch the film, you can basically feel Johnny’s own sadness metastasize through your own soul, but then you are hit with a shockingly uplifting, yet still decently ambiguous, ending that unfortunately does feel a little vacuous.
(Disclaimer: if seeing unbelievably rich people feel depressed about their lives annoys you, you may want to avoid this)
